The Piece Hall Prepares For Its 'Great Reopening' and Summer Line-Up

Like most people in Calderdale, here at Calder Valley Radio, we're waiting for things to open up from lockdown eagerly. This writer now has the same enthusiasm for popping out for essentials that she used to reserve for all-inclusive holidays and bottomless brunch. So imagine our excitement for the coming week and the resumption of an element of normal life (and shopping!)

If you're planning your first non-essential shopping trip for Monday 12th April, we'd recommend you visit our lovely local Piece Hall. From 10am, the world’s only remaining Georgian cloth hall will be open and guests will be treated to entertainment and exclusive performances from the singer Lizzie Jones MBE and local contemporary poet Kieron Higgins. As well as this Calderdale, there will be stunning displays from lighting sculpture specialists ‘Lightopia’ which will be flanking the outset of the expansive courtyard. It's set to be an enthralling sight all day, long after the sun has set! The Piece Hall is Yorkshire's most important secular building, Grade I listed and culturally unique - it's the sole survivor of the great eighteenth-century Northern cloth halls and part of West Yorkshire's long pre-industrial trading heritage. If you've never seen it, you'll be enthralled by the beautiful architecture - it's truly a precious part of our history.

Also, if you're still slightly worried about venturing out, please rest assured that visitor health and safety is key for The Piece Hall, so measures have been put in place to keep guest wellbeing at the centre of the experience. Every premise there will be regularly deep cleaned, as will all lifts, stairwells and toilets. All entrance gates will be staffed, and visitors will be asked to sanitise their hands as they enter, as well as being asked the usual COVID-19 checks around symptoms etc. All traders within The Piece Hall will be fully compliant with the latest COVID guidelines and additional outdoor seating has been put in place. The Trading Rooms restaurant, along with other eateries, will be able to serve food and drink outdoors. Also to ensure social distancing, the number of visitors will be constantly monitored, so you can enjoy The Piece Hall and everything it offers in safety without worrying about the crowds.

This grand re-opening marks the start of a thrilling new chapter for The Piece Hall, as we all try to rebuild our local community and our lives. In the coming months, there's a full programme of music events entitled ‘Live at The Piece Hall’ featuring performances from Shed Seven, The Kaiser Chiefs, Richard Hawley, The Specials and The Manic Street Preachers (here at Calder Valley Radio we're huge Richard Hawley fans so we can't wait for that one!) There's also due to be a Spring Makers Market scheduled for May which will feature the best of local produce and traders and a special performance by Ibiza legend Ellie Sax. With that plus a summer food festival coming up, we can see exactly how we're going to spend this year, popping to the Hall (and maybe needing to loosen our belts a bit after all that food...)

The Piece Hall is also planning community drop-in sessions, including, ‘Boogie Babes', which is their incredibly popular children’s play sessions. These will now take place every Wednesday and Saturday, with Friday morning classes coming soon. Boogie Babes is a relaxed and friendly class allowing parents to get together and children to have fun and exercise in a safe space. Parents will not only be able to take advantage of these stimulating classes for their little ones but will enjoy savouring a coffee and food in a safe, peaceful and well-ventilated outdoor space - we know this will welcome news to Calderdale's exhausted parents after a year in lockdown.

Nicky Chance-Thompson DL, Chief Executive of The Piece Hall, said:

“It’s nearly time to welcome people back to The Piece Hall and we’re really looking forward to opening those famous gates again. Although our gates have been closed, we’ve been working hard to ensure that the space will be safe, relaxing and enjoyable for all.

“We know how much people have missed The Piece Hall. They can look forward to an exciting programme of events throughout the year, as we all emerge from this pandemic”.

The Piece Hall gates will be open from 10am to 11pm - Sunday to Thursday, and 10am to midnight - Fridays and Saturdays. This will allow the traders to welcome customers for extended periods of time helping them find what they need after the pandemic and in safe measures fully supported by the Government and local Council.

Over and out.
